What is Download Time Calculator?

Download Time Calculator is a calculator which calculates and give estimated time to download any file with respect to their internet download speed.

You can calculate download time very easily with just two main data which are file size and download speed. That is all you need to use this free download time calculator accurate online tool.

This will tell you approximately how much time is required to download a file with respect to your download speed.

How to use download time calculator?

It's very easy to calculate download time using download time calculator. Follow the steps mentioned here:

1. Enter the size of your file that you want to download.

2. Select the correct file type from KB, MB, GB or TB.

3. Enter the approximate download speed of your internet or server.

4. Select the correct download speed measurement.

(This is important and people often gets confused in this. But don't worry, I've explained in detail what is the difference between these measurements.)

5. Now, click on Calculate button.

If you have entered all the details accurately then our tool will calculate and give you an output of estimated time to download that file. It is mainly expressed in hours:: minutes::seconds.

The download time calculator can accurately describe how much time will it take to download a file with just text. The higher the number of file size with lower download speed, the higher the time it will take to download.

It is like a reciprocal of each other. If one data is high and other data is low or vice versa, then it may take longer or shorter time to download any file.

File Size and it's Formats

File sizes are in different formats and people are mostly familiar with three common formats that is KB, MB and GB. But I've included TB as well which is much higher than these three and is the upper format of GB.

Now, look at the table below to understand different file formats and it's sizes.

File SizeAbbreviationEquivalent
1 byteB1 byte
1 kilobyteKB1,024 bytes
1 megabyteMB1,024 KB
1 gigabyteGB1,024 MB
1 terabyteTB1,024 GB
1 petabytePB1,024 TB
1 exabyteEB1,024 PB
1 zettabyteZB1,024 EB
1 yottabyteYB1,024 ZB

These are the commonly used file sizes and their respective abbreviations are mainly the shortforms of their actual name.

1 byte is equal to 8 bits. Denoted as 1B = 8b.

This is very important statement as it reveals the main difference between bit and byte. People often interpret bit and byte wrong because they don't know exactly what are these things.

Now, look at this data which tells the difference between bit and byte.

 BitByte
DefinitionA bit is the smallest unit of dataA byte is a group of 8 bits
RepresentationTypically denoted as 'b' or 'bit'Typically denoted as 'B' or 'byte'
Size1 bit8 bits
Equivalent8 bits = 1 byte or 1 bit = 1/8 byte1 byte = 8 bits
UsageUsed to represent binary data (0 or 1)Used to represent characters and data units

I know many people are first time seeing this kind of data which is more technical than usual. I mean, it is related to computer language so obviously it's little bit hard and confusing at first.

But once you understand these things, you will know and figure out everything related to computer language and binary data.

Download Speed and it's Measurements

Now this is the confusing part since people don't really pay attention to small details.

The download speed that you generally see while transferring data over any server is mainly denoted with respect to Byte like KiloByte (KB), MegaByte (MB), GigaByte (GB), etc.

But the download speed of your internet service provider or your system computer is shown with respect to bit like Kilobit (Kb), Megabit (Mb), Gigabit (Gb), etc.

And as you already read earlier 1 byte is equal to 8 bits. So whatever you see on the internet or in general download speed is denoted  8 times small than your actual internet speed.

But your main internet speed or download speed is same. It's like a same thing but different denotation.

I know people are still not sure about how to calculate download speed from mbps. So let me give you an some explanation.

How to calculate download time and download speed?

Well, to calculate download time you can use this tool which is very fast and accurate. But if you want to how to calculate download time mathematically then you can do it too.

This is the common formula to calculate download time:

Download Time = File Size / Download Speed

Let's say you want to download 1gb file and your download speed is 100mbps then according to formula given above, we can find download time very easily.

But here is one catch, unit of measurements are different for two data file size is in gb and download speed is in mb.

So to simplify things, we will convert gb into mb which will 1024mb. You can refer the table of file types and sizes from the above section.

After simplifying things and putting values, we'll get this equation:

Download Time = 1024 mb / 100 mbps = 10.24 per seconds = 1.24 seconds

This is exactly what you get from the download time calculator too.

Now, to calculate download speed, you can use any online tool like speed test and to calculate using maths, you just have to know this following formula.

1 bit = 1/8 byte or  1 bit = 0.125 byte

100 Megabits = 100/8 MegaBytes

100 Mb = 12.5 MB

If your internet speed is 100Mbps then your download speed will be shown as roughly 12.5 MBps.

Watch this video to understand better.

Here is a table of explanation of download speed types and their measurements:

Speed TypeAbbreviationDescription
Kilobits per secondKbpsMeasures data transfer in thousands of bits per second
Megabits per secondMbpsMeasures data transfer in millions of bits per second
Gigabits per secondGbpsMeasures data transfer in billions of bits per second
Kilobytes per secondKB/sMeasures data transfer in thousands of bytes per second
Megabytes per secondMB/sMeasures data transfer in millions of bytes per second
Gigabytes per secondGB/sMeasures data transfer in billions of bytes per second

Remember, the transfer speed, download speed or your internet speed is actually the same but displayed or denoted differently.

If you're still getting confused then remember only this rule 1 byte = 8 bits. From this formula, you can calculate anything related to download speed or file size types.

Difference between Download Speed and Upload Speed

To put it simply, download speed is the speed that you're getting when you're downloading something from the internet.

But the upload speed is the speed of uploading from your own source to the internet. Like if you want to upload videos to YouTube, Instagram or any other internet platform, you should have good upload to upload it faster.

Some internet service providers don't even mention upload speed since people don't usually use upload speed that much.

But if you're a programmer and content creator like me, then you should have a decent upload speed. My upload and download speed is different.

The internet package that I use is having a download speed of 50mbps and upload speed of 30mbps. So it varies for everyone according to their isp.

Why do you want to calculate download time?

To know estimated time required to download a file, we can use download time calculator.

Sometimes, download may take longer because of large file size or slow internet speed.

Then this calculator will tell us average time for the download completion.

You can set your file to download and then calculate how much time is required to download the file. Meanwhile, you can sit back and relax or go to some other work or even take a nap depending upon the time required.

As I said, it is very helpful tool since you get a rough idea how much time is required to keep your PC turned on for the download completion. I do this almost all the time when I'm downloading a big file.

This tool is mostly handy while downloading large games or software.

People call this tool download time calculator but many people who don't know the name of this tool, they may search for how much time need to download calculator.

More or less, they are talking about the same tool. So save this free tool for yourself so that you don't have to search for it again and again.

Recommended Speed for daily internet activity

You guys already know that slower the internet speed, slower the processing of the internet and data.

So, if you have a lot of work and mostly it is online related that means you need internet all the time then it is better to have good internet speed that you casually use.

Like when I was in college, I was just playing games and watching videos and this thing didn't required a lot of internet speed. I was happy with my 10 mbps internet speed. But later when I started working online and doing online business and content creation, 10 mbps felt like very slow. I upgraded my internet package to 30 mbps and everything was very fast and smooth.

Now, my internet speed is 50mbps since I have try and test a lot of things online.

The point is you have to identify how much speed you need in your daily activity.

Refer this chart for the better understanding:

internet speed recommendation

Don't just get the higher package if it's not necessary. It's a waste of money to be honest. I know saying publicly that I have 100mbps internet speed seems cool but it's a total garbage thinking.

If you don't need it then don't have it just for the sake of having it or to impress people.

I can afford up to 500mbps but I don't need that much speed so why would I waste my money. And remember the more speed you want, the more money you have to pay.
